How did he die, like, I know he was tortured but is he not immortal. I have not read the manga/LN yet so please refrain from future spoilers.

So.. It's just like that? He wish to not die alone, he became immortal. He found his daughter and was happy, then he magically became mortal agin and died? Just like that? If someones wish to become immortal they just do? See, I thought that in the anime this was not well explained, at least not until what I watched so far... I men it really sounds like magical things happen without any explantion or reason. It's like God is doing everything at random there and while that it doesn't sound clear to me if God abandoned the world or not.
I'm confuuuse! D:
His death was not explained. He claims to be immortal but still dies anyway... All in all this anime is quite obscure.
It was explained quite well:
his wish was to die happy so he was incapable to die in state of unhappines what made him immortal
when he found out about his daugher, he was happy but unfortunately he was also severely injured at that time and died.
he did not bacame mortal it was because he was happy at the time of his death he did not came back to life
he was not immortal he just had aditional conditions to die.
My guess is that his wish was to die surrounded by family and friends, so he died when he was being tortured by the undeads. When Ai revealed that he is her father, he died and became an undead. Then he died again in the grave near Hana's and with friends and family surrounding him.
Guys, two sentences that explains all.
Hampnie's wish "Die Happily"
What God granted "Not Die Unhappily"
Not Die = Immortal
He died because his wish was granted "To die happily in front of family (Ai) and friends (Julie)". He got turned into an undead because of the wounds and also because he said "I don't want to die" instead of "I want to live".
This may be quite late as I've only watched this today. I think Humpnie's theory explains why he died (I'm basing this on the anime since I haven't read the manga). God didn't abandon mankind but granted them their wishes. His wish 15 years ago when his health changed for the better was for it to go on forever thus he gained immortality. Then Hana disappeared and he realized that he would be the last human left at the very end his wish changed to 'dying happily with family, friends crying over him and a bit of regret' which was fulfilled to the t at the time he died. He had a family and a friend with him and regretting the things he couldn't say.
